Events in Wrightsville Beach center on the great outdoors, from
Blue Marlin fishing to 5K races to bocce ball tournaments. The town of
Wrightsville Beach is made up of two islands, one a narrow, 4-mile long
strip of beach and the other completely developed with a pier for each
home. Temperate weather, with summer temperatures in the 80s and winter
temperatures in the 50s, fosters an active recreation schedule, and the
city organizes outdoor events from January through late November.
Races And Triathlons
Wrightsville Beach hosts countless annual events, and races and
triathlons account for a lion's share of the city's offerings. The
Wilmington RoadRunners Club hosts the Son Run 5K Race and WB Farmers'
Market Eat Healthy Eat Local 5K in April in Wrightsville Beach, and the
Cape Fear Cyclists organizes the 22nd Annual River to Sea Bike Ride in
May. In September, Inside-Out Sports sponsors the Wilmington YMCA
Triathlon in Wrightsville Beach. The high-profile Quintiles Wrightsville
Beach Marathon, held in March each year, is a relative new comer to the
Wrightsville running scene. The event garners three dozen sponsors,
qualifies runners for the Boston Marathon and hosts up to 2,500 runners.
Beach And Aquatic Events
Amateur and semi-pro fisherman visit Wrightsville Beach's Johnny
Mercer's Pier throughout the year to avail themselves of the excellent
fishing, but the town also launches fishing competitions from the
Wrightsville Marina. The Fisherman's Post Spring Inshore Challenge
welcomes fisherman in two divisions, flounder and red drum, for one day
of fishing and more than 25 prizes, and the Cape Fear Blue Marlin
Tournament includes three days of fishing and up to $63,600 in prize
money. In May, the Aquatic Safari Hunt takes participants on and
underwater Easter egg hunt to start off the diving season. On land, the
beach season kicks off with a one-day Annual Surf-Sun-Sand Volleyball
and Bocce Ball Tournaments, which has taken place in Wrightsville for
more than 30 years.
Concerts
Each summer, local TV news station WECT sponsors the Sounds of
Summer Concert in the Park at Wrightsville Beach Park. Running from June
to August, the series includes four to five concerts a year in an open
air, open seating setting. Concerts take place every two weeks around
dinner time on Wednesday evenings, or Thursday if Wednesday's concert is
rained out. Guests bring their own lawn chairs or blankets and picnic
food for the 1 1/2-hour concerts.
Annual Holiday Flotilla
Wrightsville Beach's Annual Holiday Flotilla is a multi-day,
multi-event festival centering around a parade of boats decked out in
festive, colored lights that sails through the Banks Channel each
November. The weekend's festivities begin on Friday with Santa's arrival
and a Christmas tree lighting in Wrightsville Park. On Saturday, a
massive fair featuring a classic car show for adults, and games and
crafts for kids fills the park. In the evening, the boat parade caps off
with a fireworks display.
