WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – One of Hollywood's biggest stars could
be heading to Wilmington to direct and produce a new movie.
Sources say location scouts for Unbroken have visited Wilmington several times.Angelina Jolie is directing and producing the film, based on the New York Times bestselling book Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption.
Unbroken tells the true story of Olympian and war hero Louis Zamperini who, along with two other crewmen, survived in a raft for 47 days after a plane crash in WWII. The group was captured by the Japanese and sent to a prisoner of war camp.
The book was written by Laura Hillenbrand, who also penned Seabiscuit: An American Legend.
According to a release from Universal Pictures, the movie will be released in theaters on December 25, 2014.
Jack O'Connell (Skins) will play the lead role in the movie.
No word on when production could begin, if Wilmington is selected for the film.
According to sources, Jon Hutman, the film's production designer, has been in Wilmington at least twice to scout locations. The film is also looking at locations in Hawaii for filming.
